A sensational story that was printed and reprinted in the early 17th century and even translated into English as "The admirable history of the possession and conuersion of a penitent woman seduced by a magician that made her to become a witch and the princesse of sorcerers in the country of Province, who was brought to S. Baume to bee exorcised in the yeere 1610 in the moneth of Nouember." An account of demoniac possession, exorcism, and the witchcraft craze the reigned in France at that time. "Histoire admirable de la possession et conversion d'une penitente," was originally published at Paris by Chastellain in 1612. The "Discours des esprits" was originally published under the title "Pneumalogie, ou Discours des esprits," (Paris, Bichon, 1587). "Discours des esprits", pp. 453-636, has a sectional title-page. 8vo. [28], 636, [14] pp. Coumont, Demonology and Witchcraft, M65.8; Caillet, III, 7505; Yve-Plessis 1263; Graesse, II, 420; Caillet 7505. 18th-century sheep, plain sides; gilt spine extra. Joints (outside) starting at the top and bottom but boards soundly attached. Ex-Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Call number label, bookplate, charge slip and pocket, rubber stamp on title page and one other. Waterstaining in lower half of most pages, heaviest at front, diminishing to margins at rear.
