About this Item

2 Volumes in one. 4to (21 x 17 cm). Contemporary vellum on boards. Collation: [xx] 248 [12]; [viii] 306 [24]p. + 102 copper engrave plates that includes both animals and plants. The binding has some buckling and remnants of mold stain on back cover. Author and title in early ink on spine. The internal condition is generally very good. The previous exposure to moisture which apparently did not enter the text did however cause apparent wicking that buckled plates and text pages. There is corresponding evidence of small amount of light mold stain at the tail region as well as some light browning to some plates. The collation of plates is correct but two plates from the first work are in the second. Also, not all numbers on plates are present or visible. There is ample margin throughout the book. This work combines two of Alpini's major contributions from his exploration to Egypt as physician and avid naturalist. The first part of this work is published here for the first time and is often referred to as Rerum Ægyptiarum. Alpini had received his training in medicine at Padua and eventually became director of the Botanical Garden. His meticulous and copious notes and collections that he made wherever he touched ground during his travels to and in Egypt resulted in a number of publications. This is the third, which deals with botany as well as natural history of animals. Althought the botanical information was first published in 1592, the present posthumous work has been supplemented with notes and observations of Veslingi. (Pritzel, 113).
