Description:

HUTCHINS, Thomas. An Historical Narrative and Topographical Description of Louisiana, and West-Florida, Comprehending the River Mississippi with its Principal Branches and Settlements . the Climate, Soil, and Produce whether Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral, with Directions for Sailing into all the Bays, Lakes, Harbours and Rivers on the North Side of the Gulf of Mexico, and for . ascending the Mississippi River. Phila.: Printed for the author, and sold by Robert Aitken, 1784. 1st ed. 94, [1]pp. Modern 3/4- morocco and cloth with raised bands, gilt lettering and rules, and top edge gilt. Light scattered foxing, professional marginal restoration to one interior leaf in no way affecting text, but a handsome, very good or better copy. Very scarce. A significant description of the Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi, by the first official geographer of the United States. "Hutchins resided for several years in West Florida, presumably in the latter 1760's, when he examined minutely its coasts, lakes, rivers, and harbors . Hutchins describes first the Mississippi River and Louisiana, the advantages for trade and commerce; the coast and islands about the mouths of the Mississippi, with advice to mariners; the shifting of the channels and mouths; the town and fortifications of New Orleans and its future prospect as a great port. Then he treats the settlements between New Orleans and West Florida, the Acadian settlements, and important geographical details in ascending the Mississippi to Natchez and the mouth of the Arkansas River. Next he traces the coast of West Florida eastward to Mobile, with directions for entering Mobile Bay and the Alabama River; to Pensacola Bay and Town, then eastward to Rose Island, St. Andrews Bay, and as far as Cape St. George's. At the end of the book is a `Table of Distances' in various directions from the Belize or the mouths of the Mississippi." -- Clark I, 259. A native of New Jersey and veteran of the French and Indian War, Hutchins (1730-1789) was in London and still in the King's army at the outbreak of the Revolution. Out of loyalty to his countrymen, he refused appointment as major, and was charged with treason in 1779 for communicating with American friends in Paris. After his release in 1780, he met Franklin in Paris and then sailed to Charleston, where he joined Greene's army. Hutchins was appointed geog. Bookseller Inventory #
