8vo. 3 volumes. Illustrations. Volume 1, published in 1871, has 832 pages plus 7 pages of index, additons, and corrections in rear. Volume 2, published in 1872, includes pages 832-1610. 10 additional pages of index, etc. located in back of volume 2. Volume 3, published in 1879, has 706 pages with one index page in rear. Condition for the set is mediocre at best. All content present but set is mix matched and 2 of the 3 volumes are Ex-library. Volume 3 boards are detached with loose pages, spine pieces laid inside front cover. Volume 2 spine has a horizontal split under the title with the top section of the spine laid inside front cover. Hinges are ok for volume 2. Volume 1 spine is chipped with an ex-library stamp lower spine. Hinges are cracked. Howes C 796. According to Howes, the compiler devoted thirty-two years to this task, an all time endurance record among historians. Originally published in 1854. Bookseller Inventory #
