About this Item

8vo: xvi,404,[2],106pp, complete with frontispiece, four hand-colored maps (three folding), tracing the route of Henry V's army, the English positions at Harfluer and before crossing the Somme, and the battlefield at St. Omer, and two hand-colored plates, a battle plan showing the positions of the English and French armies and a catalog of the banners borne at the battle. Three-quarter calf over marbled boards, spine in five compartments between raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt. Armorial bookplates of John Wickham Flower (1807-1873), of Park Hill, Croydon, and John Eacott Manahan (1919-1990), history professor and "probably Charlottesville's [Va.] best-loved eccentric" to front end papers. A superb copy, text and plates clean and bright, binding secure. Scarce and desirable in all early editions. Lowndes 1689 (mistakenly dating the second edition 1831). Second and best edition (first edition, 1827) of this "brilliantly thorough account" of one of the most famous battles of English history, Henry V's campaign to gain the kingdom of France. Nicolas was a nobleman and antiquary who worked at the British Museum. His classic study of conflict, detailing not only how the Battle of Agincourt was fought but also the events leading up to it as well as its aftermath, is told through contemporary chroniclers on both the English and French sides. A detailed listing of men-at-arms, including dukes, earls, barons, knights, and their retinues, as well as the retinue of Henry V, consumes almost 70 pages. The valuable appendices (22 in all) include information on payment of soldiers' wages; contemporary popular ballads, songs, and music; remarks on the English navy; contracts for loans for the expedition; persons entitled to ransoms for French prisoners, and much more. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB0218
