About this title

The Brevard County Historical Commission, recognizing the need of a well-researched, academic history of their county, commissioned Dr. Jerrell Shofner, then chair of the History Department of the University of Central Florida, to write the manuscript. Members of the Historical Commission supplemented this text with photographs, documents and illustrations to produce a book that gives a complete picture of the Indian River area from the Ice Age through the Space Age. Volume I traces the evolution of the area from geological formation of the land through the reshaping of this land by development. It ends in 1920 with Brevard County poised for Florida's boom years...This first volume covers the period when Brevard was part of Mosquito and later St. Lucie County. These counties and 19th century Brevard included all or part of what is now Volusia, Seminole, Orange, Osceola, Okeechobee, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Palm Beach Counties, as well as present day Brevard County. Until 1905 Brevard County stretched from Mosquito Lagoon to Jupiter Inlet. This makes History of Brevard Couny an important regional as well as local history.
