Pp. xxx, (ii), 335, (1); xx, 400, with 445 wood-block engravings of birds; pp. x, 483, with 318 woodblock engravings of quadrupeds. Contemporary full polished tan calf leather, gilt ruled on the front and rear boards, spine with 5 raised bands, lettered in gilt in 3 compartments and with elaborate gilt floral designs in the other 3 compartments, board edges ruled in gilt and with lacy gilt turn-ins, original marbled endpapers, lg 8vo (9 5/8 x 6 inches). This attractive three volume set presents Bewick's early fine engravings: Volume 1: Containing the History and Description of Land Birds; Volume II: Containing the History and Description of Water Birds and Volume III: A General History of Quadrupeds. Volumes 1 and 2 are the first edition (1797-1804) and Volume 3 is the stated second edition (1791). Two points of the first edition of volume 1 of History of British Birds shows the printed price at bottom of the title page as 13 shillings and the last page of the volume advertises the third edition of A General History of Quadrupeds. From the personal library of Sir Richard Colt Hoare with his armorial bookplate. Sir Hoare, the 2nd Baronet FRS (9 December 1758 - 19 May 1838) was an English antiquarian, archaeologist, artist, and traveler of the 18th and 19th centuries (from Wiki). This is a rare set, offering three of Bewick's most important works, in a contemporary very attractive calf binding. Outer edges of marbled endpapers with slight discoloration, frontis matter and last few pages of all with volumes in mild scattered foxing, the text and wood engravings are bright and clean, professional repair to calf in the upper spine compartment of volume 2; a tight and clean copy in very good condition (see photos).
