About this Item

Professionally rebacked in brown contemporary leather. The spine now has raised bands in 6 sections with the title "History of/Bucaniers/of America/1741" printed in gold in the 2nd section. All pages are present, showing scattered staining and foxing throughout. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the inside front cover. This copy is dated 1741 on the copyright page and indicates that it is the fourth edition containing two volumes. The publishing information on this volume from the title page reads: "This Volume was printed for D. Midwinter in St. Pauls-Church-yard; T. Woodward, at the Half-Moon between the Temple-Gates; C. Bathurst, at the Cross-Keys against St. Dunstan's Church both in Fleet Street; and A. Ward, at the King's Arms in Little-Britain. MDCCXLI". The first volume is "The History of the Bucaniers of America." and contains 4 chapters, running to page 259. This volume contains 5 illustrations, including a frontispiece of the pirate Rock Brasiliano (spelled "Roche Brafilino" in the text--printers in this era to often replaced lower-case "s" characters with lower-case "f"). The 2nd volume runs from page 261 to 354 and is "The History of the Bucaniers, &cc. in America Part II." This volume contains a foldout map of the Panama region tipped in between pages 296 and 297 (see photo). A very early example of piratical history and lore. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall.
