Bloody 150 years old this book! Maroon cloth intricately blind stamped with Gaelic looking design. Some Irish bloke did a splendid job on the tool work. Dead center on the cover is a round gilt figure.an imp perhaps.bearded, with wings and a tail that looks like a flounder. Same figure on the rear board but not gilt. Spine has gilt title and figure but somewhat faded but still easily readable. Spine has a vertical crease but not broken and is lightly sun faded. Back end paper broken at hinge thus showing spine gauze. A couple of signatures are out of alignment but not loose or floating. Regardless, this book is in outstanding condition, it is tight and the boards are straight and remain brightly colored to this day. Top, side and bottom edges are red. This book is profusely illustrated by Fairholt in black and white. Each illustration is numbered with 237 in this book. Virtue Brothers "General Catalogue" of publishings at back with 32 pages in all, but the pages and pagination between pages 21 and 32 are out of sequence with no evidence of post publishing foul-play. This book appears to have exited the publishing house with these Catalogue pages out of sequence. Such is life in 19th Century London. Bookseller Inventory #
