About this Item

HUTCHINSON, Thomas. History of the Colony of Massachusett's Bay, From the First Settlement Thereof in 1628, Until.1691. [with:] .From the Charter of King William and Queen Mary In 1691, Until the Year 1750. [with:] .From the Year 1750, Until June 1774. London / Boston / London: 1760 [i.e. 1765]/1767/1828. Three volumes. [6],iv,566; [4],iv,539; iv,551pp. Uniform later nineteenth-century three-quarter calf over marbled boards, spines finely gilt. Neatly rebacked. The top and bottom of the bindings of the first and second volumes extend approximately one-half inch beyond top and bottom of text block. First volume: ownership signature and note of Nobel Laureate George R. Minot, great great grandson of historian George Richards Minot. Contemporary ink inscriptions in margins, some trimmed at foredge with slight loss. Second and third volumes: minor agetoning and occasional minor foxing. Third volume: internally fresh and clean. A very good set. HOWES H853. SABIN 34076, 34078, 34081. DNB XVIII, pp.110-12. DAB XX, pp.618-19. The first volume has the ownership signature and provenance note of Nobel Laureate George R. Minot, great great grandson of George Richards Minot, author of the CONTINUATION of Hutchinson's histories published in two volumes in Boston in 1798-1803 and a separate history of Shays' Rebellion. Hutchinson was the last colonial governor of Massachusetts, fleeing the colony with the onset of the Revolution. The first two volumes of his work are here present in their second and first editions respectively. The final volume of Hutchinson's .HISTORY., which was published for the first time in 1828 from his manuscript, is also present here in its first edition. Because of the erratic printing history of Hutchinson's work, sets such as this are quite difficult to assemble. Notes: QDB: No sets of these three volumes/editions on ABE. Closest sets: Reese (WRCAM 30343) four volumes with provenance (1765/1768/1828/1769), $3750; Reese (WRCAM 35691) two volumes (1765/1768), $300. Bookseller Inventory # 48449
