Both hardcover, H 23.25cm x L 15.5cm, in older matching half leather bindings; brown leather spines somewhat sunned and scuffed, each spine decorated with five raised bands and gilt lettered brown (title) and black (author/Vol#) labels in second and fourth compartments from heads; rubbed brown cloth boards with scuffed and worn leather corners. All edges marbled; colorfully marbled endpapers. Ink ownership inscriptions on each volume's respective front flyleaf recto - "James O. Banks | Columbus | Miss | Oct. 1855." - as well as purple ink name stamp "J.O. Banks." at top of Vol. I's title page and at tops of Vol. II's frontis tissue guard and title page; more recent owner's ink signature in obtrusive black marker on each volume's rear free endpaper recto; varied foxing throughout both volumes; Vol. II has strong toning to both of its front flyleaves. Bindings are firm. VOLUME I: i-xl, 1-527 pages; b/w portrait frontispiece of Francisco Pizarro with tissue guard sheet; South American map plate. VOLUME II: i-xix, 1-547 pages; b/w portrait frontispiece of Viceroy Pedro de la Gasca with tissue guard sheet; plate of Pizarro facsimile signatures. Still an attractive very good antiquarian set. Born in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, James Oliver Banks (1829-1904) graduated with a bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Alabama in 1847 and 1850 respectively later followed by a medical degree from Jefferson College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Banks entered Civil War military service as a captain in September 1861 in Columbus, Mississippi with Company A, 5th Battalion, Mississippi Confederate Infantry rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel in October 1862 with the 43rd Mississippi Infantry participating in action at the Battle of Corinth and Vicksburg with final service in Alabama and Georgia. Banks was first married to Martha Jane Coleman (1833-1868) of Greene County, Alabama with whom he had five children (of which two passed in infancy) and, following her death, married Lucy Watkins Young (1841-1933) on May 11, 1870 with whom he had five children (all surviving to adulthood). Lucy Young was one of ten children of George Hampton Young who owned the architecturally renowned Waverly Plantation on the west bank of the Tombigbee River between Columbus and West Point, Mississippi.
