Title: History of the Contest for United States ...
Publisher: [H.W. Rokker], Springfield
Publication Date: 1885
Edition: 1st Edition
Small 8vo. Original blind-embossed black cloth with gilt lettering. 121pp. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Very good. Binding slightly rubbed at edges and corners. Tight and attractive first edition, quite lovely internally. Illinois politician and Union general Logan (1826-86) had served Illinois as a Republican representative (1867-71) and as senator (1871-77, 1879-86), and this account chronicles the controversial 1885 contest between Logan and the Democratic candidate. "In no state in the Union has there ever been a contest so portentious," notes Lusk, "so prolonged, or marked with scenes and incidents so thrilling." Sound like another recent Illinois senate race? No sooner had Logan begun this new term than he died in office. Bookseller Inventory # 33020
