Complete five volume set. Date unstated, circa 1890. Early 1/2 light brown leather and marbled boards, marbled eps. Vol I has unsuccessful tape repair to spine, hinges cracked, minor looseness at front and rear. Other volumes bindings externally sound with hinges brittle. Corners and leather edges of covers have some scuffing and wear, minor for volumes of this age. Pages unmarked. Gilt titles in contrasting boxes with five raised bands. Clean text. Tight, solid binding. 601, 595, 548, 581 and 574 pp with 64 pp index to Vol. 5. Thomas Macauley was a British historian and Whig politician who wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer and his books on British history were hailed as masterpieces. Macaulay published the first two volumes in 1848. Volume V was completed in 1859 by his sister, Lady Trevelyn, after Macaulay's death. Bookseller Inventory # 160317
