About this Item

A four volume complete set of this classic history by Oliver Goldsmith, author of "The VIcar of Wakefield. This work is a very readable and magisterial account of English political history from the time of the Druids to 1760. Polished calf with gilt decorated spines with red labels. Marbled eps. "April 1809" ink ownership, later ink ownership, and pencil ownership on inserted leaves. Very good condition overall, bindings tight, text blocks firm. Tenth Edition, SCARCE. Individual copies are plentiful on the used book market but complete sets hard to find. Bio: Oliver Goldsmith was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet, who is best known for his novel "The Vicar of Wakefield" (1766); his pastoral poem "The Deserted Village" (1770), and his plays "The Good-Natur'd Man" (1768) and "She Stoops To Conquer" (1771, were first performed in 1773). He also wrote "An History of the Earth and Animated Nature." This antique set is bound in polished leather, with gilt-lettered red leather spine panels and ruling. The books show moderate external wear, with light soiling and mild rubbing to the covers. The spines display minor chipping. The binding of the first volume is cracked at the first page of the preface. The bindings of the remaining volumes are firm. The title page of the second volume has some staining. The pages exhibit sporadic light foxing. This work is illustrated with half-page copperplate portraits of English monarchs. Bookseller Inventory # 160316
