Each rear end paper has stain from removal of library card envelope. Volume II has library card. Inked or embossed school stamp on some pages. Ink notation front end paper. In the Preface the author describes his reasons for writing this history: "It has been my object to disengage from the great mass of facts those which relate to the permanent forces of the nation, or which indicate some of the more enduring features of national life.
