About this Item

London, 1886. Four volumes, uniformly bound in half black morocco over marbled boards, with gilt-tooled spines, top edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. Pp. 433, 447, 462, 476, indexed. A very good set. Hippolyte Taine (1828-93) was the most "scientific" critic of literature in France and the converse of his great contemporary, Sainte-Beuve. He is best known for his "History of English Literature" (1863), in which he analyzes literature through the eyes of a philosopher. He believed that any work of literature was the product of three main forces: the race, the time, and the environment in which it was created. His criticism suffered from the defect of not being criticism at all, but analysis and interpretation only, and often only an effort to demonstrate his theory. He neglects completely the imponderable factor of individual genius. "Nevertheless his approach is masterly, his logic sure, his style clear and artistic; although his ideas may now be dated, he stands as the best representative in criticism and philosophy of the school of naturalism in France." (from "The Encyclopedia of Literature," edited by Joseph T. Shipley). Bookseller Inventory # 2089
