About this Item

(KENTUCKY REGIMENTAL). THOMPSON, Edwin Porter. History of the First Kentucky Brigade. Cincinnati: Caxton Publishing House, 1868. 1st ed. 931 pp. Portraits. Orig. blind-stamped full morocco. Spine repaired with original spine laid down; some very old staining to some pages and some scattered foxing, else a very good copy. The First Kentucky Brigade, known as the "Orphan Brigade," included the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th Kentucky Infantry regiments. Its ranking officers included Simon Bolivar Buckner, John C. Breckenridge, and William Preston. The Orphan Brigade participated in nearly every major engagement in the Western theater, and proved to be one of the Confederacy's most dependable fighting units. They were present at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga, and throughout the Atlanta campaign. Thompson issued a revised version of this work entitled History of the Orphan Brigade in 1898. "Possessing everything from rosters to tall tales, Thompson's thick study is a standard source for any study of the Western theater, especially the 1862 fighting in Louisiana." Nevins I, p. 168.
