About this Item

This book was the personal copy of Guy Haynes, who has annotated some pages and has bound-in a few additional pages and partial pages of additional Haverhill history, and additional records of the Haynes family, who were early settlers of Haverhill. This book was given to a genealogical society in 1851, which has deacquisitioned it. Tightly bound in old library cloth with a rubbed, unlettered spine. Has mostly newer endpapers, with the binder saving the waterstained frontpaper that has the signature of Guy C. Haynes. Has the good condition, fold-out view of Haverhill, with a light waterstain. The title page has some stains, and has a library stamp. 227 pages with some small stains and foxing, not including the additional pages by Guy Haynes that have been bound in. Examples of addenda: Page 17 (year of 1641) mentions a Mr. Haines of Conn., and Guy Haynes has inked in the margin "Gov. John Haynes". Page 67 (year of 1690) mentions members of the Marsh family "Marsh's Hill" and the Marsh house which is occupied (in 1832) by Mr. Samuel Pecker. A 13 line 1/2 page has been bound in, which lists a few generations of the descendants of Jonathan Marsh and Mehitable Dustin (married in 1736), whose descendant married Samuel Pecker. Pages 84/85 (year of 1696) mentions Jonathan Haines and his children who were captured by Indians. The bound-in page lists the birth years of Jonathan and Sarah Haynes's 7 children who were born between 1677 and 1696. There are additional partial pages bound-in. There are many light pencil markings to the margins. Page 159 (year of 1738) mentions that "The old burial-ground in West Parish, was laid out". An ink annotation at the bottom of the page - "Land given to the Town of Haverhill by Thomas Haynes, our Grand Father". Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 12783
