Book Description Biobooks; Oakland CA, 1952. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. This 7.25 x 11.50 inch, 235 page hardcover book is the first edition of this title as printed by the Biobooks series in 1952 in an edition of 750 copies. This copy is in fine condition and probably should be described as very fine. The soft red cloth covers, with darker red spine cloth, show only a touch of shelf wear to the corners but beyond that the book is flawless in its condition. The silver letters on the spine are as new. The text pages have never been used or read, and many of the pages are uncut. This is a handsome book with several portrait illustrations and decorative color chapter headings. This title was written under the work of the great California chronicler Hubert Howe Bancroft but this text never reached full publication. For some reason the book was suppressed, probably by Stanford himself, over some difference between Bancroft and Stanford. It would remain for Joseph A. Sullivan, the publisher of the Biobooks series, to publish this title for the first time. The Bancroft treatment of Stanford, who had been called "a California Colossus" finally reached publication within the Biobooks series. 235 pages. Seller Inventory # 1505-583D
