By weaving together several other accounts of London's history, the first volume offers a continuous narrative describing the effects of Roman and Saxon invasions on London. Before offering a detailed account of each parish of London's suburbs in the second volume, Loftie also delves into the medieval guilds, wards, churches, and monasteries of the city. The second edition contains an appendix containing a sketch of the commercial history of the city. The British clergymen published several volumes about London, as well as travel, art, and architecture books. Both volumes have a prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedowns. The attractive bookplate belongs to Alice Carthew. Prior owner's bookplate to the front endpaper of volume II. 'Egerton Parker'. In half calf binding over black cloth. Externally, generally smart. A little rubbed to the boards, with some minor wear to the extremities. The leather at the head of the spine of volume I is a little rubbed. The rear hinge of volume II is starting but firm.
