About this Item

Medicine, both curative and preventive, formed an important branch of science in Persia, combining theory and practice. Persian scholars such as Rhazes (864â"930 C.E.) and Avicenna (981â"1037 C.E.) as well as many others made significant contributions to the advancement of medical science. Their works continued to be studied in Latin translations in European universities during the Middle Ages. Gondeshapur, a city in southwestern Iran, possessed a well-known medical center and hospital which regularly trained students in medical fields and employed physicians of different faiths, including Jewish and Christian. The essays in this volume cover a wide range of subjects: medical disciplines such as dentistry, ophthalmology, and veterinary medicine; medical institutions such as Gondeshapur center, hospitals in pre-modern and modern times, and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tehran; the background of Persian medicine, including Greek medicine, Galenic theory of humors, and the Hippocratic oath; pharmacology and related medicinal herbs and botanical studies; leading medical figures and authors of medicine in different periods, including some foreign physicians such as Cyril Elgood and Jean-Baptiste Feuvrier, who served in Iran; some medical practices such as bloodletting and operations such as castration; some drugs such as camphor, hemp, coriander, and borage (gav zaban) as well as health measures taken in different periods to prevent or stop diseases; and essays on such epidemics as influenza and cholera in Iran and Afghanistan.
