About this title

The History of Modern Chinese Literature is a survey of the major writers of the first half of the twentieth century and their works in the context of the events which transformed Chinese society in that period.

The themes of modern Chinese literature were quite different from those of the classics. The new literature explored such themes as peasants, women and intellectuals, as well as the urban problems of alienation and isolation, replacing the intrigues of the emperors, generals and scholars of classical literature.

The book tells about major modern Chinese writers such as Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, Mao Dun, Lao She, Ba Jin, Ai Qing, Ding Ling and Cao Yu. It also introduces lesser-known writers, so the reader has a guide to China's modern authors and their works. It gives an overview of the thirty-year period from the May Fourth Movement in 1919 to the Liberation in 1949, showing the events and ideologies that shaped modern Chinese literature. This historical and cultural framework helps the reader understand the themes and trends of contemporary Chinese literature.

About the Author:

Tang Tao, born in 1913 in Zhenhai County, Zhejiang Province, was a well-known essayist, poet, literary critic and historian as well as an expert in Lu Xun studies. In 1933, some of his essays were stifled by the reactionary authorities of the time because they were taken for Lu Xun's works. That was when he came to know Lu Xun. In the late 1950s, he edited the Weekly News together with Ke Ling, and edited the PEN column of the newspaper Wen Hui Bao. After 1949, he held many leading positions in literary and cultural departments in Shanghai, and also taught in universities as a professor. Since 1959, he worked as a research fellow for the Institute of Literature in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

His various publications total some twenty, among which are Essays by Tang Tao, The Lowered Sails, On the Life List, Essays by Hui An (Tang Tao's penname), Talks on Literary Creation, A Collection of Essays Written in Shanghai and Beijing, On Lu Xun's Aesthetic Thought, Stories About Lu Xun, On Western Influence and the National Style, etc. His last major book was The Biography of Lu Xun, which was left unfinished. Tang Tao was a committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, council member of the Chinese Writers' Association, committee member of the Academic Degree Committee in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Tang Tao died of illness in Beijing on January 4, 1992.
