First Edition. Volume 1 only, lacks map. Title page printed in red & black, vignettes, fleurons, borders at chapter headings & endings. Tide marks to free endpaper and last page, free front endpaper removed, 20th-century bookplate to front endpaper, full leather boards with five raised bands and stamped decorative frame to boards; all corners and spine ends worn. Text remains clean, and binding is solid. Interesting for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which are the opening pages which discuss the origins of the Native Americans. Two theories are put forth: A. "Natives of that Country were Aborigines, and not descended from the Sons of Noah, as the rest of Mankind are." What? Call me crazy, but I thought everyone but Noah's sons was dead! Does this imply the the Aborigines were descended from animals?? B. Pre-Columbian contact between Asia, Africa, and Europe.
