Description:

GREGG, Alexander, Rev. History of the Old Cheraws: Containing An Account of the Aborigines the Pedee, The First White Settlements, Their Subsequent Progress, Civil Changes, The Struggle of the Revolution, and Growth of the Country Afterward. New York: Richardson and Company, 1867. viii,546,[1]pp., plus four maps (including frontispiece). Original maroon cloth, stamped in blind, spine stamped in gilt. Wear at spine ends, cloth exhibits silverfishing, hinges cracked. Two bookplates on front pastedown (including that of noted collector Joseph Y. Jeanes of Philadelphia). A bit of light foxing and tanning on the last few text leaves, else quite clean internally. Very good. A presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper from Gregg to the Rev. John Fulton. Gregg was formerly rector of St. David's Church in Cheraw, South Carolina, and later Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Texas. His study is still one of the best on the native tribes of the Pedee region of interior South Carolina up into North Carolina, and a thorough history of the early families that settled in the Upper Pedee. "Really printed in London, probably some copies have an English imprint" - Sabin. An important work of Carolina local and aboriginal history. HOWES G399, "aa." SABIN 28704. FIELD 627. Book Description The State Company, 1925. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Hardcover. Blue cloth over boards with gold stamping on spine. Title page dated 1925. 629 pages. In good condition. Covers have some light scratching, some fading to cloth, especially at foot of spine. Some fraying to cloth along corners and head and foot of spine. First page of the introduction has come detached and then been taped back into binding. Gutter of back cover has cracked and also been taped together. Binding overall feels secure. No other loose or detached pages. First few pages have some tidelines along upper edge -- no other evidence of water damage that I can see. Black and white frontispiece portrait of Alexander Gregg. Pages are toned with age, but otherwise free of marks or tears. A good copy overall, certainly in good reading condition. Bookseller Inventory # 17-1919
