About this title

Synopsis:

Dover Publications, Inc., 1967. Trade paperback. (ISBN 0-486-21754-X) Translated by Edward R. Jones, B.D. Fair tight copy, page edges soiled, fair wrappers. Something of a classic in Oriental studies, this book was the first adequate history of Islamic philosophy to appear in English. Despite the scholarship that has been done in this area since 1903, De Boer's book remains remarkably modern because of its refreshing clarity and its inclusion of the very important theological aspects of Islamic scholasticism which are usually bypassed in books at so accessible a level. The book's introduction sketches in the historical and geographical background of the Islamic nation and summarizes the influence of Oriental (notably Persian and Indian) and Greek (Plato and Aristotle) thought on Islamic thinking. Chapter Two covers the philosophical and practical bases of the five "Arab sciences": grammar, ethics, dogmatics (study of doctrine), literature, and history. The next four chapters are devoted to individual thinkers, covering biographical details, ideas, critical arguments, and the influence of al-Razi, the Brethren of Basra, the Karmatites, al-Kindi, al-Farabi, Ibn Maskawaih, Avicenna, Ibn al-Haitham, Gazali, the Epitomists, Ibn Baddja, Ibn Tofail, Averroes, and others. The conclusion discusses Ibn Khaldun and scholasticism. Philosophy, history.
