About this title

Synopsis:

Railroad Valley lies in a remote region in east-central Nevada in the heart of the Great Basin. Archaeologists believe human beings first occupied the area by about 11,500 years ago, and the valley has been continuously occupied by people since that time. In spite of its isolation, Railroad Valley has been witness to much history. It has watched boomtowns founded on the dream of gold and silver quickly blossom, then wilt. Within its confines have been timber operations and salt works, cattle ranching and farming, a great automobile race, oil wells, projects funded by the federal government, and even a catfish farm. It is the site of an Indian reservation. It has been smacked by a blazing meteorite, dusted with fallout from atomic tests, and had its soil tainted by blood from a massacre. The American frontier remains perceptively close in this big, beautiful desert valley. The hardy nature of the American pioneer is still evident in the residents of Railroad Valley. This book, based on published sources as well as on recently collected oral history interviews with past and present residents, traces the history of Railroad Valley from the time of its first known human occupation to the present.
