About this Item

With an Account of the Emperor's Life After his Abdication, by William H. Prescott. Boston, 1857. Three volumes, octavo, contemporary half calf, with decorative gilt-panelled spines and black and brown morocco spine labels. All edges marbled, and with marbled endleaves. Pp. xviii, 618, 604, 565, indexed. A very good set. William Robertson (1721-93) came into fame in 1759 with the publication of his History of Scotland during the Reigns of Queen Mary and of James VI. His History of Charles V brought him the large sum of ?4500 and established his reputation as a historian of the first rank. His style and method show a resemblance to Hume, but his work was based on more careful investigation. Prescott has enlarged on this work to give us a more detailed picture of Charles V after his abdication. Charles V (1500-1558) was the grandson of Ferdinand V and Isabella I of Castile, and of Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy. As king, he ruled over more territories than any other European monarch and occupied the central position in the political and religious affairs of his age. Bookseller Inventory # 1804
