Book Description Original cloth. Book Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. [Baton Rouge, La. and Austin, Tx]: Louisiana State University Press and The Littlefield Fund for Southern History of the University of Texas, 1947-1969. Nine volumes, various editions (see below). Original cloth, each volume in original dustjacket. Light wear. Very good. A complete set of this landmark history of the American South. The second volume (Clarence Ver Steeg's THE SOUTHERN COLONIES IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, 1689-1763) was never published. The work is especially important for tracing the elements that created a distinctly "Southern" culture. Included are pathbreaking histories of the South in the colonial, revolutionary, and federal eras, considerations of the growth of southern sectionalism and nationalism, Coulter's histories of the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction, C. Vann Woodward's hugely influential ORIGINS OF THE NEW SOUTH 1877-1913, and George Tindall's successor volume, taking the history of the region up through World War Two. The volumes are: 1) Craven, Wesley Frank: THE SOUTHERN COLONIES IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY 1607-1689. xv,[5],451pp., plus illustrations. Originally published in 1949, this is the 4th printing, done in 1968. In this copy pages 62 and 63 are blank, apparently a printing error. A detailed history of the earliest development of the southern colonies, especially strong on Virginia. 2) Alden, John Richard: THE SOUTH IN THE REVOLUTION 1763-1789. xv,[1],442pp., including two maps, plus illustrations. Originally published in 1957, this is the third printing, of 1969. Alden, a military historian, is especially strong on the Revolution. 3) Abernethy, Thomas P.: THE SOUTH IN THE NEW NATION 1789-1819. xvi,529pp., including maps and charts. Originally published in 1961, this is the second printing, of 1968. A detailed consideration of what the editors considered the most obscure period in Southern history. 4) Sydnor, Charles S.: THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOUTHERN SECTIONALISM 1819-1848. xii,[4],400pp., plus illustrations. First published in 1948, this is the fourth printing, of 1966. A thorough history of this crucial period. 5) Craven, Avery O.: THE GROWTH OF SOUTHERN NATIONALISM 1848-1861. xi,[5],433pp., plus illustrations. Fifth printing (1968), following the first of 1953). 6) Coulter, E. Merton: THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA 1861-1865. x,[4],644pp., plus map and illustrations. Originally published in 1950, this is the fourth printing, of 1968. This and the following volume continue to be criticized as justifying secession and as an anti-Reconstruction defense of southern racism. 7) Coulter, E. Merton: THE SOUTH DURING RECONSTRUCTION 1865-1877. xii,[4],425pp., plus illustrations. This is the first printing, 1947, and was the first volume published in the series. 8) Woodward, C. Vann: ORIGINS OF THE NEW SOUTH 1877-1913. xi,[5],542pp., plus illustrations. This is the first printing, 1951. Woodward's masterwork remains a towering, hugely influential work on the South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A book that has spawned scores of dissertations. 9) Tindall, George Brown: THE EMERGENCE OF THE NEW SOUTH 1913-1945. xv,[1],807pp., plus illustrations. This is the first printing, 1967, and is inscribed by Tindall on the front free endpaper. Charts the increasing transformation of the South from an agrarian to an industrial region and its ongoing reintergration into the Union. Bookseller Inventory # 1380
