About this title

Clean, bright used copy with tight binding. NEVER a library book.

From School Library Journal:

YA Carefully researched and well-written, this book details the history of the sardine canning industry on California's Monterey coast from its inception in 1902 to its final decline, caused by overfishing, in the 1940s. The dangers of ignoring the warnings of ecologists are here for ecology-conscious young adults to see, as the once bountiful sardine catch and the jobs it brought to the region disappeared through wanton mismanagement of resources. Concurrent with this narrative is the story of John Steinbeck's years in Salinas and Monterey. The people who served as models for the colorful characters in Cannery Row (Viking, 1945) take their places in this living, working community. Adding interest to the text are black-and-white photos of Steinbeck, his family, and friends; also included are scenes of old Monterey. Libraries that already have more extensive biographical material on John Steinbeck will want to add this. Rita G. Keeler, St. John's School, Houston
