About this Item

One of the earliest serious, thorough studies of the island (in modern Indonesia) in English. Marsden (1754-1836) took up an appointment with the East India Company and arrived in Sumatra in 1771. He remained there until 1779, serving in the civil service. He learned Malay (published a grammar of the language in 1812) and seems to have been a man of deep intellectual curiosity; member of the Royal Society in the days of Banks. Book covers myriad aspects of late 18th century Sumatra: climate, geographical features, natural phenomena, wildlife, flora, objects of trade (gold, tin). Section on spoken language (table of examples) and written (sample alphabets). Discussion of natives and culture (behaviorial differences between Sumatrans and their neighbors; marriage customs; laws; betel nut consumption). Ex-lib. Some discreet library marking--one stamp reads "Colonial Office Library" and another says "Withdrawn from the Foreign Office Library." Gray cloth 4to. Lacks an index. > Language: English | > Size: 4to | > Media/Binding: Hardcover |. Bookseller Inventory # CORV-SEA-02300
