[Volume V:] The 150th Anniversary & Beyond 1912-48. Part II: 1920-1948. London: Printing House Square, 1935[-1952].Deluxe edition, one of 125 numbered sets. Four folio volumes bound in five. A presentation copy from the proprietor of The Times, J.J. Astor, to a former editor, Henry Wickham Steed. Five frontispieces (of which four are colored), 161 plates (of which twenty-three are colored, some are tipped-in, and several are facsimiles), and numerous head-pieces and illustrations in text. Contemporary green quarter morocco over green cloth boards, spines ruled in blind in compartments and lettered in gilt. Top edges gilt. Boards on Volume II a bit rubbed. Overall an excellent copy. Each volume in a green cardboard slipcase (slightly worn). Mounted on front pastedown is a typed addressed envelope containing an Autograph Letter Signed on Times letterhead by J.J. Astor to Henry Wickham Steed: "Jan. '35- My dear Steed, We have produced a few copies of a special Edition of The Times History- May I, on behalf of old colleagues and more recent friends, ask you to accept a copy as a token of our regard? We should all appreciate it. Yours sincerely, J.J. Astor." An additional Typed Letter Signed, also on Times letterhead from Astor to Steed, is laid into Volume V, along with two newspaper clippings.Henry Wickham "Stickum" Steed (10 October 1871 - 13 January 1956) was a British journalist and historian. He was one of the first English speakers to sound warning bells about the new German Chancellor Adolf Hitler.A wonderful association set of this rare extra-illustrated edition, with specially printed wood engravings, gravure, and collotype illustrations-a fine and magnificent production.
