About this Item

Four volumes of this fragile and beautiful history of the United States. Volume I : 288pp., plus 9 leaves of engraved plates and three two-page handcolored maps. Volume III: pp. 577-864pp., plus eight engravings and two 2-page hand-colored pictorial maps. Volume IV: pp.865-944, and 1-208 (Topography of the United States) plus 12ff. plates. Volume V: pp. 209-495 plus ten plates and one pictorial two-page hand-colored map. Handsomely bound in navy-blue publisher's cloth, with elaborate pictorial gilt-stamping to spine and boards. The flaws: Most plates are lightly foxed; Wear to extremities, including small chips and tears to heads and tails of spines; inner front hinge of Volume III cracked, resulting in ffep and fp being detached; Volume I shows a light, small dampstain to edge of rear endpapers and a half-inch chip to spine head, plus small abraded area to back; Volume IV has cracked inner hinge and detached, torn endpaper and detached fp; Volume Valso shows cracked inner hinges and missing rear free endpaper. On the whole a handsome set, bright and shiny, very good to near fine. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 007497
