Add to basketKERCHEVAL, Samuel. A History of the Valley of Virginia. Winchester, VA.; Samuel H. Davis, 1833. [3]-486pp. Very good copy in later antique style calf-backed marbled boards. Howes K-102. Thomson 668. Streeter Sale 1336. Sabin 37611. Field 822. Kercheval's text is an important and quite rare account of the settlement of the Ohio Valley, the western parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania, Indian conflicts, captivities, etc., largely taken from Doddridge's Notes on the Indian Wars(1824). A second edition with some new material was printed in 1850, but omitted Manheim's captivity and a chapter on slavery. Howes describes the book as "one of the best collections on early border wars," and Field states that "copies of either edition have become scarce, the first being much the most difficult to procure." "The first part of Kercheval's History relates to the settlement and history of the Shenandoah Valley. He was assiduous in interviewing the old timers and has assembled a large body of fact and tradition." -Streeter.
