Pages clean except for mild age toning in the margins throughout, adhesive toning and some spotting at endpapers, and some toning to the reverse of engraved plates; no owners' marks. All four volumes' bindings are square and secure, each showing some scattered surface chips, scratches, and cracks on the spine panels, spots of pale smudging or light droplet marks to the leather at front and rear, wear with rubbing through to the boards at the spine ends, heel edges, and corners, more moderate rubbing at head and foreedges though also with some wear down to the board, and some occasional scratches, scuffs, and chips to the marbled boards; nonetheless overall attractive, bright gilt titles and raised bands along the spines, nicely supple leather. 640pp. + 640pp. + 640pp. + 626pp. Black half-leather with brown and gold marbled paper boards. "Illustrated with highly finished steel engravings of historical events and portraits of eminent men from original paintings by Alonzo Chappel, Paul de la Roche, Geromae, Copley, Weir, Powell, and other eminent artists." Significantly Anglocentric and then Amerigocentric, committed to the view that the universe was created in 4004BCE, curiously opening with sections on China, Japan, Arabia, and only then moving on to Greece and Rome, with the conversion of Constantine occurring before the end of the first volume. But the engravings! Scenes of dust and disturbance contrasting with unforgettable facial expressions and incredible detail in scenic portraiture, then shifting to stately yet emotional renderings of historical figures from the United States in the final volume, unsurprisingly dedicated in large part to the memory of President Lincoln and those who tried, in many cases unmemorably, to carry the nation past its civil war.
