Publisher's red pictorial cloth with gilt lettering on spine, front cover slightly loose; with the bookplate of Arnold Thackray, and a contemporary handwritten note on the half-title: "To [Wm. H. George?], Yours Sincerely [J Badcock?]. Second edition, first published in New York the prior year. The author's most popular work, "a vigorous polemic against the persecution of scientists by religionists" (DSB), was widely read and translated into several languages.Draper (1811-1882) was a professor of chemistry at New York University. He conducted numerous original and valuable researches in organic chemistry, physiology, electricity, and telegraphy; however, he is best remembered for his outstanding achievements in the field of photography. He made the first known photographic portrait (1840), and in 1841 took the first picture of the moon.He was also the first president of the American Chemical Society (1876-1877) and a founder of the New York University School of Medicine.
