Later American edition of this very popular chapbook that was first printed in the U.S. in 1786. The story follows Peter Pippin as his love of books leads him to a respected school, where he is crowned "King of the Good Boys" and tries to properly educate George Graceless on the importance of not swearing. George and some other bad boys later skip class to go on a => rampage of birds-nesting; all are drowned or killed by wild beasts save Harry Harmless, who repents and prays for forgiveness. Includes => 10 hand-colored wood engravings with blue, green, red, and brown accents, including some nontraditional coloring such as a blue apple pie and blue horses. Provenance: Undated ink signature of Susan Browning on title-page; signature of Miss Janette C. Browning dated 1852 on frontispiece. 32mo (10 cm; 4"). 31, [1] pp., illus.
