Synopsis: This books shows how the self-destructive nature of Hitler's Germany helped ensure its own defeat. Drawing on the work of leading historians, economists, psychologists, and philosophers, the book examines Nazi social, diplomatic, economic, and military policies and blunders, along with Nazism's fundamentally nihilistic worldview.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-9-This well-written, readable book examines the interconnected ideological, social, military, and economic reasons for the collapse of the Nazi Empire. Rice opens with a synopsis of Hitler's philosophy and rise to power. Then, in separate chapters, he explains how weaknesses in the dictator's military judgment, his continued support of Mussolini's misadventures, and his ill-conceived and poorly executed invasion of Russia all affected the German war effort. The author also describes how it was further weakened by the diversion of resources and troops to support the imprisonment and elimination of Jews and details why Germany failed to use its considerable technological capabilities effectively to advance its military objectives. Rice provides background information as necessary and uses numerous quotes to help readers understand both the power and the weaknesses of the Germans. He condemns Nazi philosophy and actions, but is objective about the military events he discusses. Sidebars, numerous maps, and black-and-white photos of leaders and military action supplement the narrative. This title is more clearly written and more visually interesting than James Duffy's Hitler Slept Late and Other Blunders That Cost Him the War (Praeger, 1991). There is a plethora of material about both the Holocaust and World War II, but this book will help students make the connections between Hitler's leadership and the ultimate defeat of Nazism.
