This is the 8th impression of Tolkien's iconic novel (although the dust jacket states: seventh impression). The illustrations in the book, internally and externally, as well as on the dj are by Tolkien too. The front and rear pastedowns/endpapers feature Thor's Map and Wilderland.

It is important to note that this is an ex-library book - Whitley Abbey School; date stamped 25 March 1963 (image). While the library ephemera may prompt some people to head for the hills (the Green Hills?), to others, it will have a certain nostalgic appeal with its ticket holder and issue label/date stamps (see images). After the front free endpapers, I have not been able to track down any further librarian interference.

Condition (dust jacket): encased in a transparent plastic covering externally and supported internally by brown laid wrapping-type paper. Although we have assessed it as in a poor condition, the dj is intact and still resonates visually with the mystical world of Tolkien's land of rivers and woods, forests and mountains, distant stars and crescent moons.

There are a number of closed tears and the front flap is price clipped. In particular, at the head and tail of the spine, and immediate surrounding area, some of the paper is missing - see images of dj.

Condition (book): The pea green cloth boards are decoratively understated (compared to the dj) and feature discreet images of dragons and mountains in black ink; with the titles at the head and tail of the spine. There is some discolouration (or browning) at both spine ends and also along the top and bottom edges of the boards.

Internally, there is mild to moderate tanning throughout; with occasional spotting. The inner hinges (front and rear) are very slightly loose and reveal some of their binding materials (images). Finally, for reasons one can only speculate about, the bottom section of the final page (p. 315), has been removed. Fortunately, the last sentence of the book is still present: "Thank goodness!" said Bilbo laughing.'
