About this Item

A detailed hand-colored aquatint engraving by Edward Orme from his series “Foreign Field Sports, Fisheries, Sporting Anecdotes” published in London in 1814. The dimensions of this print are 16 ½” x 23”. William Orme was a talented landscape painter, who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1797 and 1819. Aquatint with hand coloring by watercolor was the most popular technique for works showing the colors and the varied landscapes and architectural sites of India. Orme issued this beautifully produced group of sporting prints issued in 1814. These vivid prints are based on drawings by popular English artists, such as Samuel Howitt and J.A. Atkinson. The series depict various sporting and hunting scenes from around the world, the Orme sporting prints depicted here are of India. The work gave the British public a first-view of one of the most exotic, mysterious and beautiful places within the Empire. In addition to “Foreign Field Sports, Fisheries, Sporting Anecdotes “ and his celebrated “Views of Hindostan”, Orme was involved in several other publications including J. Walker’s “The Itinerant” (1799), Francis William Blagdon’s “A Brief History of Ancient and Modern India” (1806) and F.B. Solvyn’s “The Costumes of Hindostan” (1805). This print is in very good condition overall with some foxing/staining in margins and a small tear to the bottom margin. Bookseller Inventory # SF00359434L15
