About this Item

Catnip from the height of the Silent Era. Scarce book of arch observations about all the stars from when they had faces. Only three copies located on OCLC First Search. 8vo. 20 by 13 cm. 75 pp. The humor is generally highly obscure now, even when one knows well the particular actor -- say, Chaplin, Norma Shearer, Lillian Gish, Adophe Menjou, or any of the good number whose careers and fame continued into the era of talkies. The snippets, sometimes a single sentence, sometimes, a long paragraph, often sound like the radio soundbites that might have announced a star on the red carpet -- think "Singin' in the Rain"'s intro scene. Amid the short takes on the personalities are also entries for theaters such as Grauman's. The book changes tack near the end, with mock scenarios and other off-color pieces. We can't say the book was the first such tongue-in-cheek treatment of the film industry, but surely it is early as a compendium of innuendo and gossip from an industry that nonetheless was a fraction the size it was to become within a decade, notwithstanding the convulsions of the early depression era. Moderate wear to the cover. Hardcover. Cloth spine. Paper pastedown on boards. Bookseller Inventory # 005062

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
