About this Item

Elephant folio (18 1/2" x 15"). Original gilt-stamped blue morocco, with gold lettering on spines. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Dentelles. Several ribbon markers in each volume. Engraved frontispiece in volume 1 and 6. Engraved allegorical head- and tailpieces. Two years after beginning the "Poet's Gallery," Thomas Macklin undertook to publish this stunning illustrated folio Bible in order to promote "'the glory of the English school' of painting and engraving and 'the interest of our Holy Religion.'" A new typeface and a new kind of paper were designed for the work. Preliminary matter includes an engraved dedication leaf to the King (dated 1791), and a List of Subscribers (703 people signed the subscription list, including George III). Text printed in very large type; double columns, with 29 lines to the full column. This Holy Bible is illustrated with 70 splendid full-page copper engravings after Fuseli, Reynolds, West, and other renowned artists, as well as 113 engraved head- and tailpieces. The sumptuous illustrations were designed by Britain's greatest painters, all from the Royal Academy of Arts, and executed by the foremost engravers of the time, including James Heath, James Fitler, William Bromley, Francesco Bartolozzi, and John Landseer. (Dimension of each plate: 18" x 14 1/2"; dimension of each image: 12 1/4" x 9 1/4"). Volume I has 14 plates (including frontispiece); Volume II has 9 plates; Volume III has 3 plates; Volume IV has 1 plate; Volume V has 4 plates; Volume VI has 30 plates (including frontispiece); Volume VII has 9 plates, for a total of 70 copper plates, as issued.Previous owner's bookplate on inside of first volume's front free endpaper (Methodist Historical Society - Southern California-Arizona Conference: In honor and esteem of Bishop James C.
