Description:

[with] The Psalms of David in metre . allowed by the authority of the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland, and appointed to be sung in congregations and families. Edinburgh: Sir D. Hunter Blair & M.T. Bruce, 1831. 4to. [52] pp. This Bible was owned by Thomas Carlyle (1795?1881), the complex and controversial Scottish man of letters who stood for the Victorian ideal of the Great Man, and whose works were standard household fare for considerably more than a generation. Carlyle grew up in a staunchly religious household, was well read in Divinity, and referred often in both his writings and in conversation to what he once described as => "the truest of all books." The edition of it that he chose here has Ostervald's "practical observations" supplied at the feet of their relevant pages. The New Testament has a separate title-page with the Glasgow, 1777 information, while the Apocrypha (which are signed separately) have a colophon giving "Paisley: Printed by Alexander Weir," 1778. Provenance: With Carlyle's "Humilitate" bookplate on front pastedown and his large formal (manifestly youthful) signature at end of Apocrypha, beneath which is a note in a smaller, less formal hand on his birth; his full name appears in the margin of Jeremiah XV, and just "Thomas" in margin of II Samuel, III:38. Front free endpaper with private bookplate of San Francisco bookseller John Howell, back pastedown with Howell's small professional ticket. Later in The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). 4to (25.7 cm, 9.9"). [1128 of 1132] pp. (lacks title-leaf and first leaf of prefatory matter). Herbert 1256; ESTC N471687. Contemporary mottled sheep, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, rebacked in similar calf with original spine laid on; edges rubbed, original spine leather chipped, hinges (inside) unobtrusively strengthened. Bookplates and markings as above, with additional early small slip of earlier printed cataloguing affixed to front pastedown and two instances of dried plant material laid in. Title-leaf and first leaf of prefatory matter lacking; first few leaves present browned with edges ragged and a few words lost from preliminary discourse. Pages trimmed closely, touching headers or notes with moderate frequency; age-toned, with mild to moderate foxing and occasional ink spots. Two leaves with short tears from margins, touching a few letters without loss; leaf of Jeremiah with area torn off with loss of XLIX:22?23 and L:1?2; one other leaf with edges tattered and 12 lines of text lost; one leaf with lower outer corner torn away, affecting a few words; several instances of small tissue repairs, sometimes partially obscuring a few letters. => A well-used Bible of interesting and meaningful provenance.
