About this Item

This volume is "fair-to-good." But "good," as the old booksellers say, "isn't very good." The volume is holding together well, but is missing one of the two fold-out maps. (The maps are advertised as being in "colour," though in fact the one remaining is "coloured" only to the extent that the Mediterranean has been toned a blue so pale that it barely registers in our scans.) The numerous B&W glossy plates, on the other hand, are all present & accounted for. (One gathers Mr. Carpenter was accustomed to giving talks accompanied by what we would call a "slide show.") All four board corners worn through. Additionally, the fore-edges of both front & rear boards are considerably faded from their original dark blue, probably from being damp. No evidence that said dampness penetrated to text block. Gilt topstain somewhat faded. A small bookplate appears to have been removed from front pastedown, but we find NO evidence of any lending library history. Rear hinge has been competently re-glued. 295 pp. including index. Reduced from $27. Bookseller Inventory # 004354
