Book Description Minton, Balch & Company, New York, 1934. Hardcover. Condition: Very good minus. Early printing. 313pp. Octavo [21 cm] Rebound in red buckram over boards with gilt lettering on the backstrip and front board. New endsheets. Frontispiece photograph of Porter Rockwell. Black and white illustrations. Ex-library, with a perforated library stamp on the title page. The title page was once loosely adhered to the frontispiece page resulting in a bit of adhered paper on the frontispiece, and two small abraded areas on the title page (with some loss to the title page borders). Several pieces of tape have been applied to the verso of the title page and to the dedication page along the inside margins. Porter Rockwell was the head of the Danites. This book includes information on Rockwell's first murder in Utah, Hickman, the Gunnison Massacre, and much more. "Porter Rockwell was that most terrible instrument that can be handled by fanaticism; a powerful physical nature welded to a mind of very narrow perceptions, intense convictions, and changeless tenacity. In his build he was a gladiator; in his humor a Yankee lumberman; in his memory a Bourbon; in his vengeance an Indian. A strange mixture, only to be found on the American continent." - Fitzhugh Ludlow, 1870. Seller Inventory # 51794

Includes TLS from Charles Kelly to customer Mr. W. T. Smith, to whom this book is also signed and inscribed. TLS regards Smith's book order and a new book Kelly was writing.
