About this Item

Bound in beveled brick cloth with spine titles stamped in gilt and scrollwork stamped in black. 1879 date to the title page; no additional printings. 348 pages. Dark brown endpapers. With a chapter on the Sprengisandr by Foster included. The errata slip is tipped in at p.1, and the lithographed folding map is bound in at the rear. Unlike other copies of this work we have observed, this copy has a different binding with no ads to either the endpapers or the text. With the bookplate of famed marine biologist Charles Atwood Kofoid to the front pastedown; also present is the later bookplate of Norwegian-American collector Herman Gimmestad. The volume is otherwise unmarked. The author's account of his travels through Iceland. Unfortunately someone placed a piece of binding tape between the front endpaper and the half-title. Two signatures are slightly pulled. The cloth shows moderate edgewear, with small frays at the corners and spine ends. Hinges solid. Apparently a rather scarce variant binding; the lack of ads may indicate an early binding which the publisher used only for promotional purposes. Both the folding map and Kofoid's bookplate are fine. Uncommon title in this binding. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 124341
