About this title

In The Home Place: Life in Rural Prince Edward Island in the 1920s and 30s, Jean Halliday MacKay paints a vivid picture of farm life between the wars and through the Great Depression. She begins with a brief look at the Halliday family’s arrival as Selkirk Settlers in the early 1800s in Belfast, Prince Edward Island. But most of her story takes place some seven generations later, when she and her brother and sister were growing up. Written especially for her family, The Home Place tells of life without electricity, running water, or telephones. It tells of the days when automobiles were put on blocks for the late fall, winter, and early spring because only horses could traverse the roads. It tells of the fun and trials of the one-room school, the experiences with farm animals, the excitement of Christmas and other special occasions, and the vital part the children played in achieving an orderly and pleasant house and a prosperous farm.

About the Author:

Jean Halliday MacKay was a scholar in the one-room school in Eldon, Prince Edward Island, for ten years, a teacher for four, and finally a university teacher of Home Economics.
