About this Item

Impressive over-sized hardcover in black cloth and embossed deep charcoal highlighted titles to spine and front cover in an unclipped pictorial gloss dustjacket. This First Edition was conceived and edited by Kevin W. Kelley for the Association of Space Explorers with a Foreword by Jacques Yves-Costeau and two prefaces, one by Russell L. Schweickart, and another by Oleg Makarov. Large volume with unnumbered pages has 147 breath-taking photo illustrations on gloss stock in full-color, accompanied by quotes from astronauts in their own languages and matching English translations. As would be expected most quotes are in English or Russian w/English translations, but surprisingly there are many other languages represented: Bulgarian, Vietnamese, Spanish, Arabic, French, Hungarian, German, Romanian, Polish, Czeckoslovakian, Chinese, Syrian and Hindi. Book is tight, clean and unmarked. Jacket is clean and has all edges intact. Some mild indents to jacket surfaces on both front and back covers near bottom edges, and a diagonal crease to back cover's upper outer corner, neither affecting book itself. Media mail included. About this title

Synopsis:

Conveys the human side of space exploration, in personal accounts by astronauts and cosmonauts and a collection of color photographs taken from space that capture our planet's beauty

From Publishers Weekly:

This is a collection of 150 photographs of Earth taken from space, accompanied by quotes from members of the Association of Space Explorers, a multi-national group of astronauts and cosmonauts. The pictures are spectacular: an "Earthrise," as seen from the moon; the mountain ranges, canyons, coastlines, cloud formations, tropical storms, volcanos, oceans, deserts and deltas of the Earthphotographed from thousands of miles above our planet's surface. So precise is the view that we see a plankton bloom, in an amazing inversion of scale, off the coast of New Zealand. The space explorers' commentson their experiences, their common realization of the camaraderie of all of Earth's citizens and of the fact that the Earth is fragile and too precious to be wastedrange in eloquence, but are uniformly affecting and well-intentioned: "The first day or so we all pointed to our countries. The third or fourth day we were pointing to our continents. By the fifth day we were aware of only one Earth," says a Saudi Arabian. "We went to the moon as technicians; we returned as humanitarians," declares an American. " . . . I understood that we are all sailing in the same boat," observes a Russian. 166,000 first printing; first serial to Life; Literary Guild a lternate .
