About this Item

Pp. (un-paginated): (12), (80), with 40 full page or double page plates depicting the world's wild hoofed mammals in silhouette by Ugo Mochi, each plate is accompanied a descriptive leaf of text. Publisher's original decorated Terra-Cotta cloth, stamped in black and in gilt on the spine and front cover, and with silhouettes in black of nine mammals, original clear acetsatelg folio (15 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches). This is the first edition of this classic work with Scribner's "A" printed on the copyright page. The fine silhouette illustrations by Ugo Mochi were each cut from a single piece of paper; each image show incredible anatomical detail sometimes including the natural background such as mountains or trees. The text is by naturalist T. Donald Carter; he describes the external anatomy, the life histories and the ranges and other information about each species. This work is signed by both authors on the front free endpaper. There is also a 1976 newspaper from the Standard Star (New Rochelle, New York) laid in at front. The article was written prior to Mochi's death and discusses an exhibit of his art. No ownership marks. There is slight edge wear to cloth at the top and bottom of the spine, the margin of the outer front endpaper shows some faint foxing; a tight, bright and clean copy in near fine condition.
