Book Description Library Association, London, first edition, 1982, 1982. Limited edition of 1000 numbered copies. Cloth, 8vo, xxxiv, 474 pp. 3226 entries. From the foreword by Dorian Williams: "It could almost be said that [this] is the most important book about horses that has ever been produced, as it summarizes not only a large proportion of all the books about horses, horsemanship and horsemastership, with the exception of racing, over the last 125 years, but also gives the background against which the books were written." The bibliographical information is usually limited to author, title and date; the emphasis in the discursive and fascinating annotations being very much on the contents of the work and its significance in equestrian history. The book concerns itself solely with non-fiction books, pamphlets and other literature published in Britain from 1851 to 1976. From the introduction: "By far the greater number of books collected in these pages are monographs on the Horse; but I have not thought it wise to exclude other works on Natural History dealing with the Horse, Ass, or Mule in any very distinct degree." Extremities a trifle rubbed, front board sluightly bumped near top of spine, top edge slightly darkened, otherwise near Very Good. This copy has not been numbered. Seller Inventory # ABE-02357

Book Description London: The Library Association, 1982. Limited edition of 1,000 copies, this copy no.439. Contains a narrative commentary on the role of the horse in British social history, as revealed by contemporary literature. "It could almost be said that it is the most important book about horses that has ever been produced, as it summarizes not only a large proportion of all the books about horses, horsemanship and horsemastership, with the exception of racing, over the last 125 years, but also gives the background against which the books were written. The whole scene in each period is extraordinarily well analysed so that one sees clearly the varying relative importance of the different types of horse: the working horse, the carriage horse, the hunter and so on."(Foreword by Dorian Williams).
