About this title

On Horseback and Healing is the memoir of an abused, neglected girl-child who finds escape and healing through her relationships with her horses. On the back of her pony, and later on her horses, she finds comfort and solace in the nourishing bounty of the natural world.

Her quest for a life beyond mere survival takes her all over this continent. She has many adventures and some misadventures as she wrestles with dark passages and mental instability, but she has an inner spark, which keeps her seeking the light and a vibrant connectedness.

When she marries for the third time, she manages to bring horses from her dream world back into her everyday life. Again and again, her relationship with horses helps her heal. She works with the proud but down-on-his-luck horse Chester, to help him recover from a traumatic past.

It takes forty-two years for Sharon to heal enough to revisit the painful decision to give up her firstborn son. When she tentatively reaches out to find him, she discovers that he had been seeking her for many years, and had all but given up hope.

About the Author:

Sharon Miller Blake lives in central Vermont on an 18-acre farm, along with her husband Lester, her mother-in-law Polly, her black Lab, chicken-killing dog Pepper, and her tall, handsome horse Chester. She writes of the healing power of love, nature, music, and animals.

Blake is a nurse, writer, singer, and artisan. She is a gatherer of treasures from the forest and beach. These are incorporated into her unique creations.

She crafts her shaman's rattles, drums, dream-catchers, and walking sticks from spiritually inspired visions of health and healing.

Her line of note cards are called "Chickenisms", pastels created after observing the antics of her chicken brood. All reside on Rocky Ridge Farm, in Hartland, Vermont.
